ABOUT US

St. John's was the first church in Junction City, founded in 1859.

Our building dates from that period, and additions were made in 1909 and 1960.

The building has history and beautiful church ornamentations, including our stained glass windows.

OUR HISTORY

Established in 1859, we are the oldest church in the Diocese of Kansas. Its congregation comprises a diverse array of individuals, spanning various age groups and backgrounds. The church’s membership includes individuals with Episcopal upbringing as well as those hailing from diverse faith traditions and geographical locations.

As Episcopalians, our faith revolves around the belief in a benevolent, liberating, and life-affirming God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our endeavors are devoted to expressing love for God and our fellow human beings through a combination of worship, fellowship, educational pursuits, and outreach initiatives.

Come connect with God and find more meaning and purpose in your life. We'd love to meet you!

ARMY FAMILIES

St. John's Episcopal Mission is a welcoming, off-post congregation for the Army Families of Fort Riley. After all, that’s our history; it’s “in our blood,” you might say. For 162 years, the COTC has been both parish and chapel to many Fort Riley Families.

Sometime after his arrival in 1853, Chaplain David Clarkson, the first post chaplain, an Episcopal Priest, founded an Episcopal congregation in Junction City by providing services for the town folks in community halls and private homes.  He was soon followed by Chaplain George Henderson who, along with officers on post saw the need to build an Episcopal Church in town.  In addition to Chaplain Clarkson and Chaplain Henderson, Chaplain Charles Reynolds and Chaplain Thomas Barry served as priest-in-charge of the congregation during interim periods.

Through the years, Covenant has been home to soldiers and their families, including Gen. George S. Patton, who is remembered in the church with a plaque on the pew where he and his wife sat.

It is our prayer that you and your family will stop by for a visit to experience the holiness of prayer and compassion as we live into the mission of the Gospels.
